Each year at our birthdays, when the Sun comes exactly to the same spot it was in when we were born, it is called our Solar Return. At this time we can cast a chart and compare it to the birth chart to see what will be influencing us over our personal year.

Here's an example written for a person whose birthday was December 19, for her personal year December 19, 2011 to December 18, 2012:
Your Solar Return will occur at 12:36AM on December 19 this year. Libra will be rising in your Solar Return chart, which will create an even more sociable persona with which you present yourself. You will be more agreeable to the blending of forces around you. Happy New Year! The placement of the planet Mars will propel you forward during the year 2012. Mars shows how we spend our time and what we do for physical activity. You have Venus in Libra in the fourth house of your chart. This is a beautiful placement for one who will always enjoy the comforts of home and family. You are a person who can equally take pleasure in quiet times alone and in social events. When you were born Venus was in a very nice aspect to Jupiter.
